Word Order: Just one more way we’re better than test prep books.

Learning words alphabetically is a poor way of learning — yet all test prep books teach this way. The test itself on the other hand has a very diverse selection of words. Membean presents words in an order that maximizes diversity. Initial letter, root word, subject, part of speech and difficulty are all used to ensure that the words you study are in the best order possible.

Poor word order found in books

Image of bad word ordering
  • Vanilla alphabetized lists
  • No distribution by subject
  • No ordering by root frequency
  • No ordering by difficulty
Poor word order leads to wasted effort.

Good word order in Membean

Image of good word ordering
  • Randomized by alphabet
  • Distributed across subject
  • Most frequent roots first
  • Difficulty ordered by your level
Good word order makes effective use of limited study time.

Each square represents a word and its four nearest neighbors. Red squares indicate that the word and its neighbors are very similar to each other. Such words should not be studied sequentially because they are unlikely to appear together in tests. Yet most test prep and vocabulary books put these words in sequence.

Not a long word list — the right word list

Our word lists were developed after a very careful analysis of words that most commonly appear on GRE exams. Our words are better than those in any other program or book. It’s easy to create a gigantic word list — it’s hard to create the right word list. With our word list you will not waste time learning words that are unlikely to appear on the exam.
